Since 1992 Fonadhoo has been the capital of the Laamu atoll. Fonadhoo has three villages: Barasil (northernmost), Medhuavah (in the middle) and Kurigam (southernmost). The island is connected by causeway to Gan island and Kadhdhoo. Historic sites on this island include the old Friday mosque and a very ancient shrine. The local people mainly get their income from reef fishing and agriculture.
